The United Way of the National Capital Area supports numerous efforts throughout the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area to help community members overcome poverty and work toward financial stability. Britepaths and the Financial Empowerment Center at South County were honored to have been invited to be part of United Way NCA’s Project Community Connect during the week of October 18.

On October 18, Britepaths Executive Director Lisa Whetzel joined United Way NCA President and CEO Rosie Allen-Herring on NBC4 Washington to discuss our joint efforts to serve the “ALICE” population — community members who are Asset Limited, Income Constrained, but Employed. Ms. Allen-Herring noted that this may be a neighbor or someone who works with you, and during the pandemic, it could be someone who used to donate to organizations like ours and now finds themselves in need of assistance.

During the week, the United Way NCA distributed assistance kits to community members in need throughout the area, and offering virtual workshops on a variety of topics, including personal finance and health and wellbeing that are free and available to the public. Britepaths partnered with local nonprofit A Place to Stand and Daniels Run Peace Church to distribute food and hygiene kits provided by United Way NCA to 227 Fairfax City families who have been impacted by the pandemic. On the NBC4 segment, Ms. Whetzel also noted that community members can also receive free virtual financial coaching, job readiness and resume consulting, and a variety of workshops on personal finance and career issues through Britepaths and the Financial Empowerment Center at South County, which Britepaths operates through a grant from United Way NCA and Fairfax County.
