Why Do We Need Food4Thought?
A recent study by Feeding America shows that approximately 67,000 people in Fairfax County are "food insecure," meaning that they do not know where their next meal is coming from. Fairfax County Public Schools currently provides free or reduced-price meals to more than 1/4 of the school population. The school system reports providing to 52,000 children in the 2014-2015 school year.
Educators and child health experts know that when children have access to regular healthy meals, they are healthier, perform better in school and have fewer behavioral issues. The effects of persistent hunger can follow them for the rest of their lives. In one of the wealthiest counties in the United States, it is imperative that we work together as a community to ensure that our children are able to eat regular healthy meals.
