FinLit Workshop at Mt. Vernon High School
The Financial Empowerment Center at South County (FECSoCo) recently partnered with the Psi Alpha Alpha Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. in Fairfax to bring a Financial Literacy Workshop to Mt. Vernon High School students in the MANUP Mentoring Program.
On October 25, volunteer Financial Coach Tee Carty spoke to more than 80 students about the importance of personal finance and financial planning at a young age. The interactive orientation included participation from students on topics of debt, budgeting, saving for short-term, mid-term, and long-term financial goals, and the importance of planning and saving for retirement while young to ensure financial freedom in the future.
In addition, Coach Carty discussed the importance of understanding their bills and paying their expenses on time. He went in-depth on being prepared for unexpected expenses, controlling spending and reducing financial stress. He emphasized that creating a plan to achieve their personal and financial goals would help the students be more confident about their financial situation.
Coach Carty held a similar workshop for the MANUP group at John Lewis HS in Springfield on November 19, also sponsored by Psi Alpha Alpha.
We are happy to bring Financial Literacy workshops to youth and adult groups. Contact FECSoCo at 703.704.6101 or info@FECSoCo.org.
